beginner photography example showing front, side and backlighting of plant

Hi friends,

Have you ever taken a photo… and it just didn’t reflect what you saw?

Often, it’s not your camera—it’s something much simpler.

Let’s start with one of the most important fundamentals in photography.

Pay Attention to Light First

Before you worry about settings, angles, or even your subject—look at the light.

Light is what creates your photo, and learning to notice it will change everything!

What to Look For

The easiest way to improve your photos right away is to notice where your light is coming from.

Ask yourself:

  • Is the light soft or harsh?
  • Is it coming from the side, above, or behind your subject?
  • Is it natural (like window light) or artificial?

One small shift in light can completely change how your photo feels.

Try This Simple Exercise

Next time you take a photo, do this:

Stand in one spot and take the same photo in three ways:

  1. With the light in front of your subject
  2. With the light behind your subject
  3. With the light coming from the side

Then compare them. I have included two examples for you to compare how the direction of the light matters: one with a plant – one with a person. You’ll start to see how light shapes your image—and which look you prefer.

Why This Matters

Most beginners focus on the camera.

But the best pictures come when you see light before you click the shutter.

Once you understand that, everything else becomes easier.

Cheers,

Patty
